Impact
Sun Fire v480/v490 and Sun Fire v880/v890 systems with patches 121689-03/121688-03 and Sun Fire 12k/15K/E20K/E25K systems with patch 124460-02 may experience a Solaris panic during a round-trip from Solaris to OpenBoot (OBP) and back when using the "Stop-A - go" sequence. A Solaris/OpenBoot round-trip may result in FORTH stack corruption that will break consistent DMA functionality and cause a Solaris panic.
Patches 121689-03, 121688-03, and 124460-02 are WITHDRAWN and are no longer available from SunSolve.
Contributing Factors
This issue can occur on the following platforms:
SPARC Platform
- Sun Fire V480/V490 with OpenBoot 4.22.29 (as delivered in patch 121689-03)
- Sun Fire V880/V890 with OpenBoot 4.22.29 (as delivered in patch 121688-03)
- Sun Fire 12K/15K/E20K/E25K with OpenBoot 4.22.29 (as delivered in patch 124460-02)
Notes:
- This issue only occurs when executing the "Stop-A - go" sequence.
- On Sun Fire 12k/15K/E20K/E25K systems this issue occurs only when using a Schizo I/O board.
To determine if a Schizo I/O board is in use, run the following command:
$ cfgadm -s "select=type(HPCI)"
Ap_Id Type Receptacle Occupant Condition
IO2 HPCI connected configured ok
IO4 HPCI connected configured ok
The current OpenBoot firmware revision level can be obtained by running the "prtdiag -v" command.
Symptoms
After a "Stop-A - go" sequence is issued, the following panic can be seen on Schizo based systems:
panic[cpu2]/thread=2a100337d40: pcisch2 (pci@9,700000):
consistent dma sync timeout
If the FORTH stack corruption occurs, a different panic message may be observed.
Workaround
To avoid this issue until new patches are released and installed, do not break from Solaris to OpenBoot on Schizo based systems.
Resolution
This issue is addressed on the following platforms:
SPARC Platform
- Sun Fire V480/V490 with OpenBoot 4.22.34 (as delivered in patch 121689-04 or later)
- Sun Fire V880/V890 with OpenBoot 4.22.34 (as delivered in patch 121688-04 or later)
- Sun Fire 12K/15K/E20K/E25K with OpenBoot 4.22.32 (as delivered in patch 124460-03 or later)
